LIVING MOMENTS N° 8

Bleiben Sie gespannt. Danke für das Gespräch Mr Messerschmitt, you not only carry the name of a pioneer in the aerodynamic technology and design sector, but have been working yourself as a designer in modern yacht construction for years. Is it the family burden or are you living your childhood dream? FPM: In a sense it is both. As a child I was always fascinated by airplanes and the technical drawings of Willy Messerschmitt. At a young age I had already designed and drawn ships, machines and airplanes using AutoCAD on my father’s first computer. When I learned to use 3D software later I was able to visualize my ideas and to check them for technical feasibility. Today it is extremely important to me to revive the technical and innovative heritage of the brand and the Messerschmitt legend and to implement it successfully in yacht construction. What challenges face the yacht industry, which today builds consistently larger and more luxurious super yachts? FPM: A volatile market situation as a result of various crises of the last decade – whether it’s the financial crisis, the pandemic or the current territorial conflict – and rising production costs present enormous challenges for the traditional yacht industry, in particular for large shipyards. At the same time the yacht industry has to now confront the subject of climate change and sustainability and also transform its business model in an increasingly digital world; changes in market and client behaviour are causing major adjustments in the development, design, production and marketing sectors and present the company with large challenges, that are not agile. Messerschmitt Yachts is not a large company with hundreds of employees. We have been working since our foundation in 2009 on an international level and in conjunction with experts and partner companies who suit the respective project and its requirements best and who provide the necessary passion – this ensures that unique solutions come about that are efficient and make good economic sense. We have been working intensively on the topic of sustainability since 2010 and have for example designed a tender in the “Cradle to Cradle“ principle with hybrid drive, which at the time was only used in the automobile sector. We have been focusing our attention since the beginning on hydrodynamic fuselages. Messerschmitt Yachts was one of the first at that time with the “Ram bow“ or “Reverse Bow“, we designed these fuselages for super yachts. The advantage: The yacht runs highly efficiently with less consumption at a faster speed and “pounds“ less – therefore there is more comfort on board even if the sea is choppy. Why do you now want to develop, build and launch high-performance yachts onto the market under the Messerschmitt brand? FPM: When the company was founded we already followed the objective of producing exceptional yachts at the right time under the Messerschmitt Yachts brand. We have studied the market in detail in the past few years, its requirements, existing yacht models and shipyards and gathered experience with various projects. We placed particular emphasis on a deep understanding of the people who could be the potential owners of a Messerschmitt Yacht. They are distinct personalities who have extremely concrete requirements, individual wishes and needs. The personality of a clearly recognizable Messerschmitt Yacht may not be subordinated but is more like a “Matching Partner“ that strengthens the owner’s personality on a unique level. This balance, the aspired harmony is a challenge that we are now pleased to face with an international experienced team. I don’t wish to divulge yet which yacht type resulted from this project. Our goals are ambitious because we want to set new standards in the high-performance cruising yacht sector. It will be exciting. Thank you for your time. FASTER, LARGER, MORE LUXUROIUS ... IS THAT THE DEFINITION OF YACHT CONSTRUCTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY? We asked Felix P. Messerschmitt (FPM). 63 Living Moments MESSERSCHMITT YACHTS Fotos: © Messerschmitt Yachts
