156 7TaTYR 8ZXPY_^ Edition 3 · 2015/16 The “Tres” – one of these original urban hotels– with roof terrace and views of Palma Cathedral, is right in the centre. The perfect starting point for a pleasurable evening which begins with a cocktail in the cool, completely white lounge: “Port Blanc”. Only a stone’s throw away from the historic old town of Palma, it bears its name de- servedly. To the right, the white sailing yachts rock in the harbour, to the left, tables set in white and chairs covered in white under a white sun canopy. The restaurant bar, by the harbour at Palma, is opera- ted by a Hamburg-born man and his pretty wife and has been quickly adopted by Mallorcans and holiday guests on the island. Peoplemeet here for a sundowner and are pleased that the formerly down-and-out quayside has given way to a new, hip location. The “Gaudeix”, with a small, shady courtyard, in the old town has first to be found in one of the nooks of the houses. But searching for it is worth- while. It’s been less than three years since Cristina Dias and the chef, Maria Moreno, started their own restaurant here. They are both known in Palma’s scene and main- tain an excellent network, they cooked in the “Hotel Convent de la Missió” and managed the service. Cristina also speaks perfect German: ‘I learned it during my time in the‘Hyatt’in Cologne,’ the feisty hostess says after bringing one plate after another to the table; a black pudding bonbon in roasted almond coating with aroma- tic apple mousse, or a shrimp hidden in a cross- The biggest ships rock in the water in Port Adriano; elegant sail boats, huge motor yachts. People love to show what they have got – even though some of the million-pound ships display a ‘for sale’ sign. The other side of the pier boasts a two- storey complex in the shape of a ship. Much concrete, much glass. Created by the all-time design star, Philippe Starck. Cafés, boutiques and restaurants have set out their outdoor furniture on the wood-planked terraces. People stroll back and forth, dishes clatter, watchmen on the ships doze in the sun. At the end of the row, right where the building seems about to throw itself in the water, is “Coast by East” which opened two years ago. Last year, this branch of the trendy Hamburg restaurant also opened a beach club with a swimming pool, hovering above the harbour water. The first floor boasts the Sylt icon, ‘Sansibar Wine’ and restaurant. With its beach club,“Coast by East”adds a new hue to the potpourri of trendy locations in Mallorca. Meanwhile, the island offers many of these chic sunny terraces with sea access, chill-out music and cocktail mixers – most of them close to the capital, Palma. The range of food is modern: tapas, sushi, even Thai food – everything which is ‘in’ at the moment. You come here in the late evening to drink cappuccino after dancing the night away and pay a fixed day rate which includes a lounger and a sun shade. The capital in the southwest of the island remains the unshakable magnet for evenings out ever since the first design hotels enticed the young, chic scene away from the beaches into the city more than ten years ago.
