It stretches over 90 kilometres, at a maximal width of 15 kilometres, across an area of 18 communities – of which the largest are Calvià, Pollença and Escorca – these account for nearly 30% of the island territory and an area of more than 1,000 square kilometres. 8,000 people live in the town centres, yet the overall population of the region is 40,000 inhabitants. In the monastery is a black Madonna figure which is revered as a patron saint on the is- land. The little town of Sóller is located in the so- called “Golden Valley”, in the largest basin of the Tramuntana. The majority of the oranges grown in Mallorca come from the fertile valley on the west coast of the Balearic Island. In the tiny mountain villages of Biniaraix and Fornalutx, you will find more attractive destinations nearby. The inestimable immaterial wealth, the oral tradi- tionwhich lives on in the names of the places, glosses and legends, as well as folk wisdom which have been preserved by the handicrafts, the restaurants and the feasts on the island – all this is knowledge and technique which is at risk of extinction. But they are the key to understanding the traditions of these villages and are still pursued to this day. To protect not only this cultural heritage, but also the landscape, the Serra de Tramuntana was in- cluded in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in the category of “Cultural Landscape” in 2011.
