133 www.private-residences.net 7TaTYR 8ZXPY_^ The Tramuntana mountains on the north western coast of Mallorca extend over 88 kilometres and are up to 25 kilometres wide. Starting from Dragon Island near Andratx, to the windy northern peak of the Balearic Island, on Cap Formentor, craggy mountain scenery stretches, with ragged rocky ridges, perpendicular precipitous gorges and soft rolling high valleys. The Serra deTramuntana came into being 20million years ago and was formed by the pressure of the African Continental plate pushing more and more to the north against the Eurasian plate. Today, the results of this geological process can be admired in the mountain scenery. Steep rock faces and impass- able terrain characterise the north western edge of the mountains near Port de Pollença, while the hillsides in the southeast gently rise. More than 50 mountain peaks in the Tramuntana reach an ele- vation of more than 1,000 metres above sea level. The Puig Major, at 1,445 metres, is the most massi- ve elevation in this mountain region.
